Chile's Lake District
Description:
The region south of the Bio bío River, more or less up to Puerto Montt, is generally referred to as the Lake District.
It's a fairy-tale land of emerald forests, white-capped volcanoes, frothing waterfalls, and lush, rolling hills dashed out with dozens if not hundreds of lakes, lagoons and (hot)-springs that give the region its name.
It is one of the most popular destinations in Chile for its beauty as well as for its multitude of possible outdoor activities and other distractions more reminiscent of city life.
Destinations within the Lake District include:
Chiloe Island |
Pucon |
Villarrica |
Lican Ray |
Temuco |
Valdivia |
Puerto Fuy |
Puerto Montt |
Puerta Varas.
Places in the Lakes Region
The Isla Grande of Chiloé is South America's largest island and among its most striking cultural anomalies. Divided by the gentle peaks of the Coastal Range, Chiloé's eastern and western coasts are two worlds apart. To the west is a wilderness of endless beaches, dune habitat, and temperate rainforests, much of it protected in one of Chile's most forgotten national parks.
